The Piqua Shawnee Tribe have faced dozens of different difficulties over the years. In some situations, the tribe has actually had to change locations. Unfortunately, war was not the only threat that the Piqua Shawnee faced. During these years, many in the tribe were infected with smallpox. During the rebellion by Pontiac, several blankets were removed from Fort Pitt. A number of tribes had been exposed to smallpox in the past. Since the Shawnee had never been exposed, though, the disease was particularly pernicious. Eventually, the disease was passed to the Choctaw and Chickasaw tribes.
